According to details reported by Forbes transportation contributor Brad Templeton, a pedestrian was crossing Maple Avenue in Dallas away from a crosswalk when he was struck from behind by an SUV traveling roughly 35 mph in a 30 mph zone. The impact threw his body more than 30 feet into the oncoming lane.

That oncoming lane was occupied by an unoccupied Waymo Jaguar I-Pace. The robotaxi was traveling about 24 mph and, according to Waymo, detected the pedestrian entering the roadway from the far side when it was still around 150 feet away. The car began slowing in anticipation, and by the time the pedestrian was flung into its path, it had reduced its speed to about 5 mph. The Waymo made contact with him and stopped immediately. Both the Waymo and the SUV remained at the scene. The pedestrian was treated by bystanders and emergency crews but later died at the hospital.

Why the Robotaxi Was Likely Not the Cause of Death
