SEPTEMBER 1982
In 1982, Howard Schultz became the head of marketing because of his connection to a company that was helping supply Starbucks. Soon after, he took a trip to Italy where he discovered cafes that sold espresso beverages and he became inspired. At this time, Starbucks was only selling coffee beans, so Howard suggested they change it to a cafe type of coffee place but no one else was keen on the idea. Sometime in 1984, Starbucks also acquired Peet’s Coffee. Howard then left Starbucks to start Il Giornale in 1985, because of difference of opinions.
